SEMS at ICMS 2011 – Thailand

Two of our researchers, Armand Omar and Aziiz Sutrisno, was presenting at th 4th International Conference on Modelling and Simulation, Phuket, Thailand on April 25-26, 2011. Both of their papers were among 179 paper selected from 512 paper submissions, representing 35% acceptance rate.

Pak Armand presented his research with Pak Komarudin on “Combination of Dummy Department and Wheel Structure Representation for Facility Layout Problems with Empty Space”.

Pak Aziis presented his research with Pak Akhmad on “Systems Dynamics Model for Understanding Contributions of Biodiesel Industry in Indonesia”

SEMShare: Industrial Engineers & Capital Markets

SEMShare topics for this time is about Industrial Engineers and Capital Markets. The knowledge sharing events invited Mr Yanuar Pranuradhi as Head of Business Development at PT Mandiri Sekuritas.

Pak Yanuar started by reflecting on his years in IEUI on how he, as an Industrial Engineers, transformed from working in engineering at Schlumberger to finally arrived working in the capital markets. He then explained how the capital markets works to highlight all the sub-sistems in which how Industrial Engineers could contribute by utilizing the system approach on improving the process.

The session was alive with questions about capital markets, including the last world economic crisis which somehow triggered by the capital markets.

IE and Capital Markets

We would like to thanks pak Yanuar who had taken the time from his busy schedule to share his knowledge with us.

SEMShare : Operational Excellence

The SEMS Knowledge Sharing Program (SEMShare) continues with more topics regarding the industrial engineering world. This week,  one of our alumni, Mr. Ricky Tjok, gave a lecture regarding Operational Excellence in Organization. Slightly different from the last event, this time, students who are taking the QCAS class are mandatory to attend this discussion.

Mr. Ricky Tjok graduated from IE UI in 2008, and has been working for Accenture ever since. He has done some consulting project and now ready to pass on his experience to the younger generation of IE UI Student. The discussion start with a brief explanation of Accenture and what the company does. Then, Mr. Ricky continued by explaining the definition of  Operational Exellence. Because most of the attendants are from the QCAS class, Mr. Ricky then tried to link the term “Operational Excellence” to many quality improvement methods such as Six Sigma.

The Q&A session was alive with some question from the student regarding the topic, but the focus was on the Six Sigma project since they are currently conducting that kind of project for their Final Assignment in the QCAS class.

IE National Competition (LKTI) 2011 Preparation

Lomba Keilmuan Teknik Industri (LKTI) – the 1st and the best National Industrial Engineering Competition in Indonesia, will be held its annual competition this year at Depok Campus on Monday, March 4 to March 6, 2011. All 25 invited teams will play a SME (Small Medium Enterprise) Case in the 2nd Stage of a total of 3 stages, developed under supervision of SEMS Lab. Last year, SEMS also provided the case simulation of disaster management case using agent based modeling software.

This year we will host 5 teams in the labs that is connected to 1 server, while other labs would be hosting other groups of 5 teams. Therefore, preparation for this event is underway. Since the lab is already have a simulation gaming area, it is relatively easy to relayout the lab to accommodate the event.

We wish all committees a successful event, break a leg …
