SEMS Lab Participate in 1st Workshop on System Modeling for Policy Development

Two of our researchers, Akhmad Hidayatno and Armand Omar, participated in the 1st Workshop on System Modeling for Policy Development, jointly organized by UKP4 (The Presidential Working Unit for Supervision and Management of Development) and ITB’s School of Business and Management. Mr Akhmad Hidayatno was invited after submitting his paper based on his Ph.D thesis on the sustainable development of biodiesel industry though a multi-level system dynamics model.

This 1st workshop’s theme were “Rehearsing Initiatives” which was explain by Dr. Kuntoro Mangkusubroto as head of the UKP4 to rehearse or exercising policies using the system modeling approach as the next important stage for one of UKP4’s roles to support the decision making of the Presidency. There were 40 paper submitted and 9 were selected to be presented in this workshop, from various institutions in Indonesia.

The workshop also opened by the keynote speech from Prof. Iwan Jaya Azis from Cornell University, who is currently on loan at Asian Development Bank (ADB).  His speech talked about the use of modeling in economics and how we should approach and use them.

The workshop was considered a success, and the subsequent workshops will be conducted in the future to gain more insights from the use of systems modeling in policy development.

U Theory Learning Journey – Stage 2

As part of our mission to expand the horizon of thinking for our lab assistants, we are introducing the concepts of Otto Scharmer’s Theory U to reignite the understanding of our nation’s founders.  The stage 2 consists of visits to the Museum Penyusunan Naskah Proklamasi (Independence Proclamation Script Museum) to reflects the conditions and situations during our crucial moments of independence proclamation, and based on these reflections, the create new dreams for the future through sculpturing. The sculpturing session is conducted in the nearby Taman Suropati (Suropati Public Park), which draws attention from the surrounding people. The sculpture they produce shows the dreams of future Indonesia.

U Theory Learning Journey – Stage 1

Theory U: Leading from the future as it emerges.

In his book, Theory U, Otto Scharmer invites us to see the world in new ways—and to learn from the future as it emerges. It all hinges on our attention. “If I attend this way, it emerges that way.” But what often keeps us from “attending” is what Scharmer calls our blind spot”¦the inner place from which each of us operates. Unless we become aware of that blind spot—both as individuals and as communities and larger systems—we won’t be able to successfully address the pressing issues and challenges of our time. (Excerpts from the presencing institute)

We want to expand the knowledge of our lab assistants, therefore we are conducting a small discussion regarding theory U, with Mrs. Ernie Widianty, in our lab. The stage 1 discussion, mainly act as an Icebreaking Session, to get to know each other, before dwelling into the details of Theory U. The 2nd stage would be a field trip to the museum of declaration of indonesia’s independence, as a sensing journey. The museum was chosen due to Independence Day Spirit of August 17 in Indonesia.

SD Workshop 2010

System Dynamics Modeling Workshop is the first of (hopefully) many workshops conducted by Systems Engineering, Modeling, and Simulation (SEMS) Laboratory. The workshop centered on the modeling of System Dynamics as a tool to create a representation of many complex matters in the real world. Throughout the workshop, the participants learned the concept of System Thinking, Stock and Flow Diagram, Conceptualization with Causal Loop Diagram, and System Dynamics modeling with PowerSim. The workshop lasted for 3 days from Moncay, August 2nd to Wednesday, August 4th. The workshop consist of 20 participants from 2007, 2008, and 2009 students of TI UI. Mr. Akhmad Hidayatno, Mr. Armand Omar, and Aziiz Sutrisno are the instructors of this interactive workshop.
