Introductory SD Workshop on Modeling Fiscal Policy for Sustainable Development

SEMS in collaboration with PT Makara Mas (Holding Company of Universitas Indonesia) conducted an introductory system dynamics workshop on modeling sustainable development for Fiscal Policy Agency – Ministry of Finance, Government of Indonesia. The workshop was part of Low Carbon Support, provided by the United Kingdom (UK) for the Ministry of Finance, especially the Centre for Climate Change Financing and Multilateral Policy (PKPPIM) in the Fiscal Policy Agency. PKPPIM are tasked to recommend a low carbon fiscal policies especially starting from the national budget 2015. This is why they needed a more integrated modeling tool to be able to evaluate green fiscal policy impacts.

FPA has already a strong group of economic models that are based on IO Models, SAM, and CGE, however since the questions of green policy is multi-dimensions with multi-sectoral approach, they feel that they need to have a more adaptive model to answer these questions.

The workshop was conducted for 5 days in the 2nd week of February, ranging from the basics of systems thinking and system dynamics, group dynamics, simple model building and closed by discussion on future models development of a new “green fiscal policy” model.

National Energy Council Workshop on SD

SEMS Laboratory is developing a model to evaluate the energy impact on land transportation strategy for the Dewan Energi Nasional (DEN – National Energy Council). The model is based on System Dynamics, therefore we kick off the model development by conducting an introductory one-day workshop on System Dynamics Modeling.

Our researcher, Aziiz Sutrisno, lead the workshop aims to give a foundation for the council’s expert to understand the SD “engine” of the model.

An Indonesian System Thinking Book

Mr. Akhmad Hidayatno has published a book title Systems Thinking: A Way of Thinking for a Better Understanding of Complex Problems, In Indonesian. The primary book purpose is to introduce the systems approach thinking to local communities, because not many book on systems thinking were publish in Indonesian.

Buku Akhmad Hidayatno

The book consist of 8 chapter that covers from systems definition, thinking definition, systems thinking, mental models, problem solving with systems thinking, and quantitative support for system thinking. A special chapter also discuss about how to teach system thinking based on the author experience in facilitating “Systems Thinking” mandatory course in Industrial Engineering Master Program. When asked to explains about the book, Pak Akhmad explains:

“In this Indonesian Language books, I introduce a new definition of Systems Thinking that is based on the combination of DeBono Thinking Concepts to Properties of System. A new unique nickname of “De BATIk” served as a memory jogger for the properties of system: multi-dimentions, boundaries, goals, holistic (emergent properties) and interconnections. As you probably know, Batik is a traditional design pattern of clothes in Indonesia, recognized by UNESCO. System thinking means asking groups of questions using De BATIk to improve our understanding of system.

Based on these two combination, I also proposed a 5 steps of problem solving using system thinking.”

SEMS Researchers Team at QiR Seminar

Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia organized the 13th International Conference on Quality in Research (QiR) 2013, following the previous successful conference in Bali in 2011. The bi-annual International Seminar are open for all Engineering Disciplines, including Industrial Engineering. The selected theme for this year conference is “Exploring Innovation for Enhancement of Human Life and Environment”. Under this theme the conference focuses on the innovative contributions in science, engineering and design as well as their market perspectives to the existing and future enhancement of human life and environment quality. The seminar was held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, 25-28 June 2013, at the Sheraton Mustika Hotel.

SEMS supports this seminar by presenting 2 papers regarding the use of system dynamics in marketing strategy. The paper was presented by Mr. Irvanu Rahman and Mr. Rama Raditya. It was a successful. We invite you to come for 2015 QiR, planned in August 2015.
